Computer animation (or CGI-animated) is the art of creating moving images with the use of computers. It is a subfield of computer graphics and animation. Increasingly it is created by means of 3D computer graphics, though 2D computer graphics are still widely used for stylistic, low bandwidth, and faster real-time rendering needs. Sometimes the target of the animation is the computer itself, but sometimes the target is another medium, such as film. It is also referred to as CGI (computer-generated imagery or computer-generated imaging), especially when used in films.

Demo Reel Breakdown

00:00 - 00:07: Title Screen done using After Effects.

00:07 - 00:20: Modeled in Max and rendered using Mental Ray. Rain done using particle system and smoke using Particle Flow. Plane was asset from external modeler. Flame is from a green screened asset pack.

00:20 - 00:27: Animation of trolley car. Modeling and texturing of trolley done by myself inside of Max. Modeled using a chamfer box and edit poly. Textures created in Photoshop using photos taken of actual trolley car. Used for a visualization in Victor, Colorado's pursuit of adding a working trolley to the town. Made while at Fay Engineering.

00:27 - 00:41: Drill modeled off of existing photos of actual drill. Modeled in Max and rendered in Mental Ray. Hand model created by Zygote and modified to look like a glove using Mesh smooth and Edit Poly tool.

00:41 - 00:50: Commercial type building built using actual reference. Modeled in Max. Textures made by me and lit using the 'E-light' plug in. Trees are from the SpeedTree catalogue. Rendered using standard scanline rendering.

00:50 - 01:07: Medical animation done to show how to get into the rib cage. Models done in Max and rendered in Mental Ray. Human model and hand model are Zygote assets. Hand was modified using mesh smooth and edit poly to look as a glove. Both instruments were modeled off of actual tools.

01:07 - 01:12: Interior shot modeled in Max and rendered using Mental Ray. Models are assets from the 3d World Magazines. Using a Mr Sun with Mr Portals to project the light inside.

01:12 - 01:18: Modeled in Max off of an actual floor plan. Rendered using Mental Ray. Texturing done by myself using Photoshop. Trees are free Xfrog assets from a Max download site.

01:18: - 01:25: Interior shot was modeled using Max and rendered using Vray. Assets are from 3D World Magazines and donations from fellow 3D artist. Texturing done by myself.

01:25 - 01:30: Modeled in Max and rendered in Mental Ray. Scenes furniture was completely modeled by hand. Extra pieces of plating and set pieces are from a library I have put together from various websites and magazines. Render was then composited in Photoshop for final output.

01:30 - 01:41: Modeled in Max and rendered in Mental Ray. Used Particle Flow to generate random particles that collide with growing clot. Vein cut away texture created by medical illustrator.

01:41 - 01:48: Animation was to show accident in warehouse due to negligence. Modeling done in Max. Lift was asset from Turbo Squid. Rendered using Mental Ray. Animation was done by me. Character walking was done using Character studio and MoCaped files.

01:48 - 02:05: End credit done using After Effects.
